Week 4

The amount of risk involved in life determins the majority of our actions.

Trees transpire and use up heat, unlike air-conditioning which simply re-located the heat out of a certain area.

The standard household should be able to store 95,000L of water to be self-sufficient with water supply.

This equates to around 260L a day.

18-26 DegC is the perfect living temperature.

The average temperature of soil beneath the surface of earth is 21.6 DegC.

Trees can process 20 tonnes of dust per hectare.

You should always understand the history and make-up of soil before you build on it.

If you moitor wind, it is possible to yield a better crop when growing organic crops.

The catchment area covered by your roof can be put to use by planting useful fauna around the run-off areas so that the rain nourishes these plants, and isn't wasted.

I didn't get quite as much out of this lecture as I think I could have. I think my intake was affected by my impression of the speaker...and my opinion on houses like these. While it WOULD be wonderful if everyone did this and the world would be an amazingly better off place, it isn't going to happen. Ever. There will always be those who don't care, and who will quite happily use up unnecessary resources.

I also got the impression that he was slightly self-righteous, making numerous comments about how 'architects' don't do this and how 'architects' don't do that. I don't think it's ever possible to stereotype people, and personally egernally think that architects are put in a poition where they are simply designing a house to the client's orders, and while small changes can be made that can improve the sustainability of the house, many cannot and it isn;t the architect's fault. It would be the client not taking to an idea because they do not believe it is their concern to save the environment, and due to more effort or cost, decide on the simpler, more common yet less sustainable method.

As wonderful as it is that there are people out there making such a huge effort to do their little part in soicety to save the world, i think people who make a difference in others' lives and make a wide-spread change in sustainability that deserve more credit. it is simple enough to change your own life, it is a feat to change others' ways of thinking and living.
